Our Duty of Care: Protecting
the environment is becoming an increasingly high priority for
business. Here at R. J. Parry Joinery we are committed
to developing a culture in which protection of the environment
is a common objective.
Every business undertakes activities
that have an impact on the environment, from small office
based companies to large factories with complex processes.
As legislation becomes more stringent, it is becoming more important
for us to look at the way we run our businesses in terms
of trying to reduce our environmental impacts.

FSC
The Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental organisation
dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world's
forests.
It was founded in 1993 in response to public concern about deforestation
and demand for a trustworthy wood-labelling scheme.
|

FSC operates a system of forest
certification and product labelling that allows consumers to
identify wood and wood-based products from well-managed forests.
There are a number of other "eco labels" around but
they do not have the same strict environmental, social and economic
standards or such a rigorous chain of custody; tracking timber
from the forest to the final user. Therefore the FSC is the only
one endorsed by the major environment charities including WWF,
Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the Woodland Trust.
PEFC
The PEFC Council (Programme
for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an independent,
non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which
promotes sustainable managed forests through independent third
party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism
to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting
the sustainable management of forests. |
PEFC
is a global umbrella organisation for the assessment of and mutual
recognition of national forest certification schemes developed
in a multi-stakeholder process. These national schemes build
upon the inter-governmental processes for the promotion of sustainable
forest management, a series of on-going mechanisms supported
by 149 governments in the world covering 85% of the world's forest
area.

PEFC has in its membership 31 independent national forest certification
systems of which 18 to date have been through a rigorous assessment
process involving public consultation and the use of independent
consultants to provide the assessments on which mutual recognition
decisions are taken by the membership. These 18 schemes account
for over 100 million hectares of certified forests producing
millions of tonnes of certified timber to the market place making
PEFC the world's largest certification scheme.
The other national members schemes are at various stages of development
and are working towards mutual recognition under the PEFC processes. |
