Restoring a Historic Icon: The Linotype Works, Altrincham
Project Overview
The Linotype Works in Altrincham is more than just a building—it’s a cornerstone of British industrial history. As the former home of the revolutionary Linotype printing machine, this Grade II listed site carries national significance. When it came time to restore this landmark to its former glory, R J Parry was proud to play a key role in its transformation.
Our Contribution
R J Parry was commissioned to manufacture and install a range of bespoke timber features that were critical to maintaining the building’s original character while ensuring modern performance and durability.
Key deliverables included:
– 67 bespoke timber windows handcrafted using Accoya modified timber and Sapele hardwood. These included:
– Opening casement windows
– Stunning Oculus oval pivot windows — designed to allow easy cleaning from inside
– A high-quality two-tone finish: crisp white internally, classic black externally
– Double entrance doors and frame made from Accoya timber; constructed traditionally with mortice and tenon joints, haunched, wedged, and glued for lasting strength and authenticity
-Fanlights, intricate cornicing, and timber mouldings; faithfully replicated and matched to original designs using Accoya for longevity and accuracy
Attention to Detail
Working on a heritage site demands more than skill—it requires sensitivity to history. Our team meticulously studied original features and profiles to ensure every timber moulding and cornice matched the building’s past, seamlessly integrating old and new.
The Result
The Linotype Works has been reborn as a beautiful example of industrial heritage restored with care and expertise. R J Parry is proud to have helped preserve such a vital part of Greater Manchester’s history, blending traditional joinery methods with durable, sustainable materials.
“This was a project that demanded precision, craftsmanship, and respect for heritage—and we were honoured to deliver exactly that.”
