A stormproof window is a modern variation of the traditional casement window, giving enhanced weatherproofing because the sash section overlaps, or lips over, the window frame section rather than sitting flush within it. Like a standard casement, the opening sashes swing out like a door, and the window sections are manufactured from solid timber and mortice and tenon jointed. It’s probably the most common window style being manufactured today.
Frame: the outer, fixed timber structure built into the wall opening.
Sash: the opening or fixed panel that holds the glass, overlapping the frame on all sides for weatherproofing.
Hinges: traditional stormproof butt hinges, or the more modern friction hinges, which hold the sash open at any angle without a separate stay.
Casement fastener: the handle that draws the sash shut against the frame and locks it.
Glazing bars: the narrow timber bars dividing the glass into individual panes.
Cill: the horizontal timber at the base of the frame that sheds water away from the window.
Stormproof windows suit both period and contemporary properties, and the overlapping rebate makes them a strong choice anywhere exposed to driving rain or wind. There’s a wide choice of ironmongery available in different finishes, and friction hinge versions in particular give a clean look with the stay built into the hinge itself rather than a separate arm across the glass.
