A tilt and turn window can open in two ways from a single sash, tilting inwards at the top for ventilation, or opening fully inwards on side hinges. They’re becoming increasingly popular for their operational simplicity, and suit both modern houses and offices well. In the tilt position, fresh air flows in at the top while stale air escapes around the sides, without the strong draughts a fully open casement can create, and without the gap needed for a child or object to fall through. Opened fully from the side, the outer face of the sash can be cleaned from inside the building.
Frame: the outer, fixed timber structure built into the wall opening.
Sash: the single opening panel that holds the glass and both tilts and turns.
Tilt and turn mechanism: the hardware built into the edges of the sash that switches between the tilt and turn functions.
Handle: a single handle that controls both functions, turned to different positions for closed, tilted or fully open.
Multi point locking: locking points around the full perimeter of the sash, engaged when the handle is turned to the closed position.
Restrictor: hardware that limits how far the sash can tilt open.
Cill: the horizontal timber at the base of the frame that sheds water away from the window.
Tilt and turn windows work well on exposed sites or anywhere ventilation is needed without leaving a window wide open, since multi point locking is fitted as standard for good security in the closed position. The side opening function also allows the window to be used as a fire escape, which makes it a common choice for upper floor bedrooms and offices. Being able to clean the outer face of the sash from inside also makes them a practical choice anywhere access from outside is difficult, such as a property backing onto a canal or a river.
