Heritage Casement Window Replacement — Chester City Walls
Project overview
A period property within Chester’s historic city walls required the full replacement of a deteriorated timber casement window. The property is listed, placing strict requirements on what any replacement could look like and how closely it had to match the original.
The challenge
The existing window had reached the end of its serviceable life. The timber frame had rotted significantly, the lower section was structurally compromised, and the glazing had failed. Repair was not a viable option.
Because of the property’s listed status, a like-for-like replacement was required — the same proportions, the same glazing bar layout, the same profile details. Any deviation risked non-compliance with the listing requirements.
Our approach
We manufactured a new hardwood casement window to match the original precisely. Every dimension was taken from the existing frame before removal. The glazing bar configuration was retained exactly, along with the original moulding profiles. The window was finished in RAL 9016, consistent with the property’s existing paintwork and sympathetic to the surrounding streetscape within the city walls.
The result
The finished window is indistinguishable from the original in character and appearance. It meets the requirements of the listed building status while delivering the performance and longevity the client needed.
