A shaped window is any window built outside the standard rectangular format, made to fit an unusual opening or to give a property a distinctive architectural feature. We are able to produce virtually any size, shape and type of wooden window, and have experience making all of the curved and unusual styles below.
Swept head: a window with a top rail that curves gently from side to side, rather than a straight horizontal line.
Bow fronted: a window that projects outward from the wall in a shallow curve, made up of several straight or curved sashes.
Bay: a window that projects outward from the wall, usually made up of three or more sashes set at angles to each other.
Bullseye: a small circular or oval window, sometimes called an oculus, often used as a feature rather than for ventilation.
Arched: a window with a curved or rounded top, ranging from a full semicircular arch to a gentler segmental curve.
Gothic: a window with a pointed, rather than rounded, arch at the top, associated with Gothic architecture.
Triangular: a window shaped to fit a triangular opening, most often found in a gable end.
Shaped windows are most often used as a feature in their own right, whether that’s a bay window forming the centrepiece of a front room, an arched window over a front door, or a bullseye or triangular window filling a gable end that a standard window couldn’t. They suit period properties where the original opening was never rectangular, as well as new builds looking for a distinctive architectural detail.
