Accoya Sash Windows for a Chelsea Townhouse

Case Study

The brief

The property required timber sash windows that would sit correctly on a period elevation. Six openings across the front elevation needed replacing match the existing proportions and glazing bar pattern.

Why Accoya

We chose Accoya for the timber because of its dimensional stability and resistance to rot and swelling, which matters more on a townhouse elevation than most people realise. Sash windows move daily, and standard softwood on a period property with limited maintenance access will show that movement within a few years through swollen meeting rails and sticking sashes. Accoya’s acetylation process gives the timber a 50 year above ground service life guarantee, which suits a property where the windows won’t be repainted or serviced every year.

As an Accoya Approved Fabricator, we work to the specification standards the material requires, from moisture content at manufacture through to the paint system applied.

Why Fineo vacuum glazing

Fineo was specified because its near zero unit thickness let us keep the glazing bars slim and true to the original sightlines, avoiding the thicker double glazed units that often distort a period window’s proportions

The result is a window that reads correctly on a period elevation from the street, with the thermal performance of modern glazing behind it.

The finish

The sashes were finished in a slightly pinky colour, a considered choice for a heritage property where the wrong shade of white or an overly modern colour can sit awkwardly against the brickwork.
